Analysis of exposure to organic pollutants Measurement of toxic compounds Test performed in a certified laboratory

📕 Instructions (PDF file)

Pesticides, plasticisers, flame retardants and persistent organic pollutants are man-made organic pollutants that contaminate our daily environment.

Humans are exposed to them by three main routes:

  •     Inhalation of polluted air.
  •     Ingestion of contaminated water or food.
  •     Skin contact with the substances.

Pesticides are chemical substances used to kill living organisms. They are used in agriculture (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides) but also for domestic use (biocides).

Plasticisers are chemical additives used to modify the properties of plastic polymers. They are the markers of our exposure to this pollution.

Flame retardants are chemical additives added to most materials to limit their flammability.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals whose use has been banned for several decades but which are still found in the environment.

Knowledge of the exposome is based on measuring exposure to these pollutants in biological samples.

EXPOZOM proposes to measure pesticides, plasticisers, flame retardants and persistent organic pollutants in the hair to assess exposure.

What are the main health risks of exposure to organic pollutants?

The toxicity of some of these pollutants may be apparent from low doses of exposure due to their endocrine disrupting nature.

Pesticides :

  •     Carcinogenic effects
  •     Mutagenic effects
  •     Neurotoxic effects
  •     Reprotoxic effects
  •     Teratogenic effects (effects on the embryo and foetus)
  •     Endocrine disruptors

Plasticisers :

  •     Disruption of the hormonal system
  •     Disruption of fertility
  •     Carcinogenic effects
  •     Teratogenic effects (effects on the embryo and foetus)

Flame retardants :

  •     Endocrine disruptors (PCB) and brominated flame retardants (PBDE)
  •     Neurotoxic through cholinesterase inhibition (organophosphates)

Persistent organic pollutants :

  •     Bioaccumulation
  •     Carcinogenic effects
  •     Neurotoxic
  •     Endocrine disruptor

EXPOZOM carries out the search for pollutants in the hair to assess your exposure.

Several levels of analysis are proposed:

The list of molecules searched for has been established to measure as a priority the most toxic substances to which humans are most commonly exposed.

Depending on the level chosen, the analysis covers a selection of 10 to 200 chemical molecules from among pesticides, plasticisers, fireproofing additives and persistent organic pollutants.

These organic molecules are classified as high priority for public health by the international health authorities, notably the WHO, the US EPA, the ANSES and HEALTH CANADA

What pollutants are tested for in the EXPOZOM Organic Screening test?

The full list of chemicals tested for is available here: Expozom Organic Screening molecules.

Why use an EXPOZOM Organic Screening test?

  •     To know your exposure to pesticides, plasticisers, flame retardants and persistent organic pollutants.
  •     To identify the most toxic pollutants in your environment.
  •     Understand the associated risks and be able to act to protect your health.
  •     Receive advice on how to limit your exposure.

What are the benefits of using an EXPOZOM Organic Screening analysis?

  •     Simplicity of use: reliable and very simple sampling methods, requiring no technical skills.
  •     Highly accurate measurement results.
  •     Reliability of a certified French laboratory using state-of-the-art technology.
  •     Complete and anonymous analysis report.
  •     Prepaid return of the samples included in the kit from many countries.

Your analysis report:

  •     Available within 10 working days.
  •     Presents the concentrations of the organic pollutants analysed expressed in pg/mg (picogram of pollutant per milligram of hair). This concentration is compared with the values of the main international standards and allows you to interpret your level of exposure to pollution by pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, plasticisers and flame retardants.
  •     Gives clear indications on how to identify the sources of the detected chemicals.
  •     Recommends effective solutions to limit daily exposure.
  •     Presents the main technologies to protect against exposure to these pollutants.

What does the EXPOZOM Organic Screening kit include?

  •     A device that allows you to take the necessary amount of hair for the analysis.
  •     The analysis of your samples in a certified French laboratory.
  •     The interpretation of your results by biomonitoring experts.
  •     A complete and anonymous analysis report.
  •     Precise instructions to guide you step by step in the performance of your sampling and a sampling sheet for the interpretation of the results.
  •     Prepaid return of your samples to the laboratory.

How to use your hair sampling kit?

The measurement of exposure to organic pollutants is carried out on the first centimetre of a strand of hair.

  •     Use the device provided to take your hair sample.
  •     Carefully place the hair in the aluminium foil provided for the protection of your sample.
  •     Send your sample to the laboratory with the collection form, using the pre-paid envelope provided.

How many tests do I need?

Only one EXPOZOM Organic Screening test kit is needed to measure a person's exposure.
